Understanding E-Bike Regulations
Council received a presentation from the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP on the rules and regulations governing electric bicycles (e-bikes) and other micromobility devices in British Columbia.
The presentation explained the differences between legal e-bikes, e-dirt bikes, e-scooters and other electric-powered vehicles, including where each may be operated, licensing and insurance requirements, and how they are regulated and enforced under the Motor Vehicle Act. The RCMP also highlighted common misconceptions and emphasized that some electric-powered bikes sold in stores are not street legal and may only be operated on private property. The District of Coldstream is not a participating community in the provincial e-Scooter pilot project, so e-scooters are not allowed to be ridden within the District at this time.
Council thanked the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP for the informative presentation and for helping increase awareness of the regulations to support safe and responsible use of e-bikes and other micromobility devices.
