Operation of the Lavington Pool has been challenged by the presence of gravels in one of the drain lines connected to the circulation pump. In the spring the sand filters were replaced, and it was thought the contamination was from material that leaked out of the old filters. Similarly, a watermain repair nearby caused water quality problems, including debris in the distributions lines and this likely contributed to some of the issues with the material in the pipes. However, the issue persisted despite repeated flushing of the system and, through camera inspections of the pipes, the source was determined to be from the gutter-drain pipe.
Previous upgrades to the pool include the mechanical system in 2014 and the chlorination system in 2023. Most of the pool components are 12 years old, or less, except for the gutter-drain pipe, which is a 35-foot piece of pipe that collects the water from the gutter drains and conveys that water to the circulation pump where it is then sent through the sand filters and the chlorination system. Other than a small section replaced when the chlorination system was upgraded, there are no records of the gutter-drain pipe being upgraded. The camera inspection of this pipe highlighted several cracks that are large enough to allow for gravel to infiltrate into the system.
Replacing this pipe will involve concrete works and installation of new pipe and bedding sands. Because new concrete will need to cure for seven (7) days to prevent damage from chlorinated water, it is expected that it will take up to 15 days for the pool to be reopened. The pool was closed on July 22, 2026 and is expected to be reopened on August 8, 2026. Vernon Recreation has been informed throughout this process and have adjusted their swim lesson schedules accordingly.
